Velvet Kesar Chandan, a saffron and sandalwood attar

Kesar chandan is one of the classical pairings in Indian perfumery, not a modern combination. Saffron and sandalwood have been used together for centuries, and the reason is straightforward: saffron on its own is warm and slightly sharp, and sandalwood rounds it into something smooth.

This attar follows that pairing directly. Saffron leads, sandalwood carries the middle, and the fragrance settles warm rather than sweet. The oil contains no alcohol and comes in a 6 ml bottle.

Fragrance notes and oil concentration

• Saffron, or kesar, at the opening. The most expensive spice in the world and one of the oldest materials in Indian perfumery, warm with a slightly honeyed edge.
• Sandalwood, or chandan, through the middle. Creamy and steady, and what smooths the saffron rather than competing with it.
• A traditional pairing rather than a new one, which is why this reads as classical where the citrus and floral attars in the range read as modern.
• Alcohol free base. With no alcohol diluting it, the oil stays on the skin instead of evaporating off it, which is why one drop replaces several sprays.
